Milestone 10 Achieved: Heterogeneous Catalysts Validation

The REDHY project has successfully achieved Milestone 10, demonstrating a conversion yield exceeding 95% in redox couple conversion and water splitting—meeting and surpassing the targeted performance.

To reach this milestone, CRM-free heterogeneous catalysts were developed for both anodic and cathodic applications using co-precipitation synthesis. These catalysts were validated in a single-cell setup equipped with external catalytic reactors. The materials were applied via spray coating onto tailored electrode supports—nickel felt for the anode and carbon paper for the cathode—and were also immersed in external mediator tanks.

Electrochemical testing was conducted at a current density of 1.5 A cm⁻². Hydrogen production at the cathode outlet was measured using a digital flow meter, yielding 51.2 cc/min. This closely matched the theoretical output of 52.27 cc/min, resulting in a faradaic efficiency of 98%, clearly exceeding the project’s milestone target of 95%.
